WHat is: Postpartum hemorrhage

Postpartum hemorrhage is abnormally heavy bleeding that occurs after giving birth. It typically occurs within one day of giving birth, but can occur for up to 12 weeks after. It is a very serious condition, as it can result in a dangerous drop in blood pressure. Significant drops in blood pressure, if not treated quickly, can cause the body to go into shock, which is the result of the body’s organs not getting enough blood flow. Postpartum hemorrhage affects 1-5% of births.
